From longing, into belonging
It started with two little girls.
Welcome to Lebanon, a small country with a big heart and a captivating story! Nestled along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, Lebanon is a land of majestic mountains, lush valleys, and ancient cities that have stood for thousands of years.
Due to its unique location and geography, Lebanon has, throughout history, been the setting for countless tales and unforgettable legends. Great civilizations passed through its lands, from mighty pharaohs searching for cedarwood to Roman emperors building temples that touched the stars, and from iron-clad knights guarding stone castles to master stonecutters who carved places to live, pray, and hide into towering cliffs. Lebanon is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world, with a history spanning more than 5,000 years and archaeological evidence of human life dating back over 7,000 years!
Our history made us legendary, but our unity makes us unstoppable. Every difference between us is a sparkling piece of a magical mosaic that only shines when we are together. Let’s explore our past, cherish our journey, and build a homeland where we all belong.
I first created this book for my daughters, Alexa and Chloe, as a fun and educational way to help them discover Lebanon. As it came to life, I realized it could also find a place in other homes, whether in Lebanon or in the diaspora.
My goal was never to create a history book or a travel guide, but rather to open a small window into Lebanon, especially for children growing up in the diaspora, so they can connect with the beauty of their homeland and its rich history through tales, facts, and simplified illustrations suited to their age.
أهلًا بكم في لبنان، البلد الصغير ذي القصة العظيمة والقلب الكبير! يتربّع لبنان على شواطئ البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وهو موطن الجبال والوديان والمدن العريقة التي صمدت لآلاف السنين!
بفضل موقعه الفريد وطبيعته الجغرافية المميّزة، كان مسرحًا لقصص وأساطير لا تُحصى عبر العصور. لقد مرّت على أرضه حضارات عظيمة؛ من الفراعنة الجبابرة الباحثين عن خشب الأرز إلى الأباطرة الرومان الذين بنوا هياكل تلامس النجوم؛ ومن الفرسان المدرّعين بالحديد الذين يحرسون القلاع الحجرية، إلى البنّائين المبدعين الذين نحتوا أماكن للعيش والصلاة والاختباء بين الجروف الصخرية الشاهقة! كما أنّ لبنان يُعدّ من أقدم المناطق المأهولة في العالم. يمتدّ تاريخه لأكثر من خمسة آلاف عام، والحياة البشرية موثّقة بأدلّة أثرية فيه منذ أكثر من سبعة آلاف عام!
إنّ تاريخنا جعلنا كالأسطورة، لكنّ وحدتنا تجعلنا قوّة لا تُقهر. كل اختلاف بيننا هو قطعة تجمعنا في لوحة رائعة لا تكتمل إلا بتعايشنا. لنستكشف ماضينا، ونعتزّ برحلتنا، ونبني وطنًا يتّسع لنا جميعًا!
لبنان، بالنسبة لي، ليس مجرّد مكان على الخريطة، بل وطن يعيش في الذاكرة والقلب؛ عالم من القصص والذكريات، وروائح طعام شهيّ، وبحر وجبال، وأناس طيّبون يحملون في قلوبهم حبّ الحياة.
أعددتُ هذا الكتاب في البداية لابنتيّ، «ألكسا» و«كلوي»، بطريقة ممتعة وتعليمية تساعدهما على اكتشاف لبنان. ومع تبلور الكتاب، أدركتُ أنّه قد يجد له مكانًا أيضًا في بيوت أخرى، سواء في لبنان أو في بلاد الاغتراب.
لم يكن هدفي يومًا أن يكون هذا الكتاب مرجعًا تاريخيًا أو دليلًا سياحيًا، بل أن أفتح نافذة صغيرة على لبنان، وبخاصة للأطفال الذين يكبرون في بلاد الاغتراب، ليتعرّفوا إلى جمال وطنهم وتاريخه الغنيّ من خلال الحكايات والمعلومات والرسومات المبسّطة التي تناسب أعمارهم. وكذلك حرصتُ على أن تكون اللغة العربية بسيطة وسهلة القراءة، ليتمكّن الأولاد الذين يعرفون شيئًا يسيرًا من العربية من قراءتها.
